4 of 5 Helen Slottje, an attorney with the Community Environmental Defense Council, decried the dearth of Federal and State regulations governing gas drilling activities which are, incredibly, immune from oversight by the EPA at the Federal level, and very loosely regulated by the DEC in New York. For example, gas drilling is exempt from the Safe Water Act, the Clean Drinking Water Act and other Federal statutes designed to protect the public from hazards secondary to drilling and pipeline transmission.

The forum "Impacts of Gas Drilling with High Volume Hydrofracturing"was held in Trumansburg, N.Y. on December 8, 2010 and sponsored by Ulysses Gas Drilling Advisory Board, Coalition to Protect New York, and Committee to Preserve the Finger Lakes.

On December 21, 2010 the Tompkins County legislature passed a resolution to ban hydro-fracking on all county owned lands. Citizens voicing their support for the resolution. There were two drafts offered, but the first was amended and passed with only one vote against. Thanks to the Tompkins County Public Information Office for providing a video feed.
